"In a place like Montana a university can play a vital, culture-building role. For a good part of this century, raw ranch kinds and small town youth who might have learned in high school that they liked to draw horses or work in clay have found in this university a creative horizon they could not otherwise have imagined. The School of Art at Montana State University has long been an outpost of modernism in the Northern Rockies, opening up this part of the West as a home to progressive art and artists."

-- Gordon McConnell, Senior Curator & Assistant Director, Yellowstone Art Museum, except from Montana State University School of Art Faculty Exhibition catalogue
