Miriam Schapiro: Works on Paper,
A Thirty Year Retrospective
Exhibition dates: September 4 through November 24, 1999
At the Art
Museum of Missoula
Few artists occupy a more imposing position in the history of
contemporary art than Miriam Schapiro. Through the
extraordinary body of work she has created over the past half
century, and the example she has set for women artists
everywhere as a leading figure in the feminist art movement, Ms. Schapiro has had a profound impact on the art world.
While the title of the exhibition indicates thirty years of the artists
work, it really includes somewhat more than that. And while it focuses on works on paper, for an artist who is famous for
experimentation with different media and the use of both new and traditional materials, it just as equally provides almost a full
survey of her work, her development as an artist, her thinking and ideas about art and an opportunity to see why Miriam occupies
the important and richly deserved position she has achieved in the world of art today.
